Teju Babyface's Wife Robbed On Eko Bridge, Her Car Damaged

Tobi Oyelakin, wife of popular comedian, talk Show host and TV producer Teju Babyface, was on her way to the mainland at about 8pm last night when her car was attacked by hoodlums on Eko Bridge. She was in the car with her driver and 3 other girls in the back seat and were approaching the National Theater area of the Eko bridge when they encountered some traffic.

They had barely come to a stop when 4 boys leaped out of the shadows and knocked on the windows with torch lights and asked them to roll down the windows. They were still trying to come to terms with rising levels of panic when the hoodlums shattered the rear windows on both sides of the car and proceeded to rough-handle the ladies in the back seat and collect all valuables.

The hoodlums proceeded with impunity to open all the bags and pour the contents into nylon bags they brought along. This was in the presence of all other motorists on the bridge. The robbery went on for well over 2minutes from start to finish.

When they had finished and disappeared into the shadows and the occupants of the car were able to drive away, they saw policemen further down the bridge on patrol and reported t‎o them that they had been robbed, whereupon the policemen empathized (or sympathized) with them simply by saying 'ah, those boys have started again'.

Luckily no one sustained grave injuries in the attack and Teju's wife is fine but very shook up.

Speaking about the incident, Teju said;
"One realizes that this is becoming almost commonplace and acceptable in Lagos as reports reaching us indicate that it happens daily. That may very well be an axiom but I share this with you to bring attention to what threatens to become endemic. A great contretemps I must confess."

President Jonathan, Sambo & Others To Get N3.24bn Severance Payments

President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice-president Namadi Sambo, non-returning federal lawmakers, ministers and presidential aides will collect N3.24bn as severance allowances, investigation by The PUNCH has reveals.

The severance allowances   are contained in the Remuneration Package   put together by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

According to the package, Jonathan, who will hand over to the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on May 29, is entitled to 300 per cent of his annual basic salary. The President’s annual basic salary is put at N3, 514,705 and therefore his severance allowance will be N10, 544,115 after May 29.

The severance allowance is without prejudice to his other constitutional entitlements as a former head of government.

Similarly, Vice-President Sambo, who leaves office the same day as Jonathan, is also entitled to 300 per cent of his annual basic salary put at N3, 031,572.50. This means that his severance allowance after May 29 is N9, 094,717.50.

For having held the office of vice- president, Sambo also has some constitutional entitlements and perks.

PUNCH adds that about 76 senators are not returning to the National Assembly either because they did not stand for election or because they lost their bids to return. They are however entitled to N462,019,200 at the expiration of their tenure on June 5.

Like Jonathan and Sambo, they are entitled to 300 per cent of their annual basic salaries as severance allowances. This amounts to N6, 079,200 per senator.

In the House of Representatives, about 290 members are not returning to the 8th National Assembly to be proclaimed into existence by Buhari on June 5.

Each of the members is entitled to N5, 955,637.50 as severance allowance. This means that the 290 members   will be paid N1, 727,134,875.

The ministers, on the other hand, will be collecting a total of N253, 967,212.5. There are 42 ministers in Jonathan’s cabinet. Thirty one of them are senior ministers and 11 are ministers of state.

Each of the senior ministers is entitled to N6, 079,200 severance allowance while each of the ministers of state   will receive N5, 872,740.

This means that collectively, the senior ministers will get N188, 455,200 at the expiration of their tenure on May 29 while collectively, the ministers of state will be collecting N65, 512,012.5 .

The aides to the President comprising special advisers, senior special assistants and special assistants will get N775, 207,125.

There are 23 of them who work with the president as special advisers. Apart from this number, however, there are several others estimated at 110 who work with the vice-president, the First Lady(Patience Jonathan) and special advisers that are designated either as senior special assistants or special assistants to the President.

This means that there are about 133 aides to the president and each of them is entitled to 300 per cent of their annual basic salary which amounts to N5, 828,625.

The Nigerian democracy has been identified as one of the costliest in the world as a result of a large number of political office holders. Some experts, for instance, think that a cabinet made up of 42 ministers is too large. However, constitutionally, each of the 36 states   is expected to be represented in the Federal Executive Council.

Bicameralism is another source of worry for many observers who believe that Nigeria can do with one chamber of the National Assembly. Some Nigerians have called for part-time legislature as a means of saving cost.

However, the worry of many Nigerians is not what the lawmakers earn monthly but what accrues to them through self-appropriation and   constituency projects.

The Publicity Secretary of the pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, said:
“It is   unjust   and morally reprehensible for these officials who mostly have fleeced the public till with veracious rapacity to legislate crazy retirement benefits. It is nothing but robbing the public for people who lived off the state for four or eight years to want to become permanent liability on the system.

This is a country where civil servants who served the country for 35 years are queuing to death for pensions that mostly remain unpaid. There are no serious countries in the world where public officials earn what ours take not to talk of the sickening retirement benefits they ask for.”

Photo : I Was Paid Only N10,000 – Ogun Schoolgirl’s Cousin Who Sold Her Confesses

         Okorie, Njoku and Precious

Kelvin Okorie (aka Okito), the maternal cousin of the 15-year-old Ogun schoolgirl, Precious Nwaigwe, who was kidnapped and sold to Libya(Read here) has said he was paid N10,000 for the deal!

Okorie spoke on Tuesday at the Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja, where he was paraded along with his friend, Ogbonna Njoku (aka John).

Njoku’s brother, Nzube Chukwu, who is based in Libya, had taken custody of Precious before selling her to a pimp. The pimp claimed she bought Precious for $6,000 and forced her to work for the money.

You recall that Precious returned to the country on Friday after she finished paying the money and an additional 500 dinars. She had told PUNCH Metro that she was betrayed by Okorie, who she trusted.

Precious on Tuesday said she observed Okorie arguing with his friends over money, without suspecting that it was his share of her sale that he was asking for. She also admitted joining street girls in Libya, after she was tortured by the pimp so she could raise the $6,000.
“I spent almost a year paying the money,” she said.
However, Okorie, a tiler, while talking to journalists, denied knowing the money he collected on the fateful day had anything to do with Precious being trafficked. He said:
“There was a day I was going to my house in Ojota when a lady called me and said she was my cousin. I said I did not know her, but after she introduced herself to me, I recognised her.

I asked what she was doing in that area by that time of the night because it was 10pm. She said I should come and see a guy, who she introduced to me as her boyfriend. She followed me to my house, together with one of my friends, Daniel. She narrated everything that happened to her and how she was attacked by cultists in Ode Remo.”
PUNCH reports that Okorie said his friend, Daniel, who was to travel asked him if Precious would be interested in travelling with him. He said he was happy and discussed it with the victim, who agreed.
“She said she had not finished schooling, but I said she could go there to continue her education and even work at a filling station where she could make money and send to her parents.
It was after that day that we went to Ogbonna (Njoku)’s place in Alaba. Ogbonna gave us the number of his brother in Libya and I did not know what they planned. It was while we were at Alaba that Daniel gave me N10, 000.”
However, Njoku said his brother, Chukwu, had only spent three years in Libya and that he did not know the business he was into.

Njoku, who sells compact discs in Alaba market, claimed Okorie, Precious and Daniel only visited him and demanded his brother’s phone number, which he gave them.
“Immediately I connected them with my brother, I left them. I was surprised when the police arrested me. I did not know anything about this. It was after my arrest that I learnt what happened,” he added.
A mild drama however played out when the police spokesperson, Kenneth Nwosu, put the two suspects together and querried them. Below is an excerpt of what played out.

Police PRO:     Okorie, the N10, 000 you collected was for what?

Okorie:           I said I did not have money and that was why Daniel gave me the money.

Police PRO:     Was the money meant for the sale of Ugochi (Precious)?

Okorie:           He just gave me the money.

Police PRO:     What was it meant for?

Okorie:           (Stammers)….I collected the money, I did not mean to sell her.

Police PRO:     Did you tell Ugochi’s mother before taking her to Libya?

Okorie:           No, I didn’t tell her.

Police PRO:     Why did you lie to Ugochi that you told her mother you were taking her to Libya?

Okorie:           (Stammers…) Daniel said I should lie to her (Precious).

Police PRO:     The girl’s mother is your cousin, the time Ugochi was missing, you were aware, why didn’t you tell her her daughter’s whereabouts when you saw her?

Okorie:           Sir, I am very sorry.

Police PRO:     Did Okorie tell you that Ugochi was missing and her parents were looking for her?

Njoku:             No, he didn’t tell me they were looking for her.

Police PRO:     Okorie, did you tell him or not that they were looking for her?

Okorie:           I told him

Njoku:             Can we swear about that?

Nwosu said the suspects would soon be taken to court, adding that the police had already arraigned three other suspects earlier arrested in connection with the abduction.

They are Innocent Onyekwe (38), Ugwu Maduabuchi (37) and Christian Chima (19).

The Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, said the police liberated the victim.

He said:
“The investigation process was long, tortuous and harrowing. We deployed cutting edge technology and adopted out-of-the-box tactics to achieve results. At every turn, the safe liberation of the victim was top on our operational engagements, taking into account the pains and trauma of the parents.

Numerous suspects were arrested, but the breakthrough came when a decoy team of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, led by the Officer-in-Charge of the squad, SP Abba Kyari, arrested Okorie, a cousin to the mother of the victim. Through him, contact was established with the gang members in Libya, which subsequently led to the safe return of the victim to Lagos on Friday, almost a year after her abduction.”

Mohammed, a resident of Hayin Malam Bello in Rigasa district of Igabi local government area of Kaduna State, took off on his journey to Lagos at exactly 6: 35am at the palace of Sarkin Hayin Malam Bello, Alhaji Kabiru Isa Gangarida.

Speaking to newsmen before embarking on the journey, Mohammed said:

I Worked To Raise $6,000 For Libyan Pimp ─ Kidnapped Nigerian Schoolgirl Narrates Ordeal

Precious Nwaigwe, a 15-year-old schoolgirl, who was kidnapped in the Ajah area of Lagos State about a year ago, has said she was made to work for $6,000 the Libyan pimp paid to buy her.

She added that after paying the money, she was again used as collateral for a 500 Libyan dinars (N50,000) loan. She also stated that her abductors conducted pregnancy tests on her three different times, which were negative.

The schoolgirl, who was released on Friday, spoke to PUNCH Metro on Monday in Ikeja, Lagos.

She said she saw more than 1,000 Nigerian girls, who were also forced to work for the money paid by the pimps to the human traffickers.

Precious was kidnapped in May, 2014 while returning to her school, Ikenne Community College, Ikenne, Ogun State. Her parents were contacted by the kidnappers in the Niger Republic, about two months after, demanding $100,000 (N19.9m) as a ransom.

Policemen from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad went to different parts of the country to arrest suspects.

A principal suspect and cousin of the victim, Kelvin Okito, was said to have eventually made a call to his accomplices in Libya, asking them to free the victim. She returned to Lagos on Friday.

Precious said she would never forgive her cousin for betraying her trust.

She said she was actually abducted in Ode Remo, Ogun State after she stumbled on some cultists en route to her school in Ikenne.

She said;
“When I left Sangotedo Park in Ajah for school, I was the only one in the vehicle, so the driver dropped me off at Ibeju Lekki. I got another vehicle from there, which took me to Ode Remo around 9pm. I could not find a cab that would take me to Ikenne where my school is. I did not know they were having a festival that day and people had been asked to stay indoors.

I trekked for about two hours until I stumbled on some people who were talking. I discovered they were cultists and they accused me of eavesdropping. They added that I knew their secrets. The ladies among them descended on me.
After the ladies were done beating me, they asked the men in the group to take turns to rape me.”

She said she faintly heard a man in the group protesting the decision. She said the man, who she later identified as Seun, took her to Ojota in Lagos.

She said Seun took care of her for two weeks, while she recuperated from her injuries.

Precious added:
“One day, he said he wanted to help me to get eyedrop because my eyes were swollen. I begged him to allow me to follow him, at least to see the sun. He obliged me and while we were going, my slippers cut and I went back into the house to pick another one. I was on my way when I saw Kelvin (Okito) my maternal cousin.”

The Ohaozara, Ebonyi State indigene, said she narrated her ordeal to Okito, thinking that he would rescue her.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Okito, however, took her to the Alaba area of Lagos and connived with his friend, John, to sell the 15-year-old to John’s elder brother, identified as Nzube Chukwu. Chukwu was said to be based in Libya.

She explained that Okito deceived her that he had discussed with her mother to take her to Libya where she would continue her education.

She said:
“He said he had called my mum and told her he was taking me on a journey to Libya. I pleaded with him to allow me talk to her, but he said my mum was happy that I was going to Libya, where I would continue my education.”

She said together with some other migrants, they spent four days on the road before reaching Agadez in the Niger Republic. She said at that point, her co-travellers told her that it was a journey of life and death.

She said:
“We spent four days on our journey to Agadez in the Niger Republic. The other people with me said it was a journey of life and death. I managed to get a phone, called my mum and asked her for money so I could return to Nigeria. They discovered the phone that I used to call my mum and they seized it. I was made to stay indoors in Agadez for three weeks.”

She said they later started the journey to Libya and spent seven days in the desert, adding that some people died on the way.
“We got to Bra in Libya seven days after. I met the wife of the man (Chukwu) and she asked me if I had been told what I was there for. I said, ‘Yes, to continue my school.’
I was taken to a place where there were so many girls wearing only pants and bras. I told them to wear their clothes. But they laughed at me and said, ‘this one is a JJC (naive)’,” she added.
Precious said the woman told her she had bought her and she must work to pay back the money.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the woman told her she would pay $6,000, including transport, accommodation and feeding costs. She said when she did not cooperate, she was beaten up.
“Every night, they would torture me with cigarette stubs. They locked me up in a room and beat me up,” she added.
Our correspondent learnt that the practice in the area was that every day’s job was documented in a notebook. At the end of the month, the total money made by each of the girls would be tabulated and divided into two.

The money would then be shared ─ one part for accommodation and feeding, and the other for transport cost incurred while travelling down to Libya.

Precious said she had pleaded with a man that had indicated interest to sleep with her on a night, to allow her make a call with his phone. She said she called Okito and told him she was suffering, begging him to talk to the woman to allow her go.

Okito was said to have assured the 15-year-old that he would do something.

She said:
“But I paid the money back on my own. The man (Chukwu), who sold me to the woman, then came back and started making trouble again.”
It was learnt that Chukwu later used the victim to borrow 500 dinars (about N50,000). She said she was relocated to another part of the town, Baladia.

Precious said she was accused of sleeping with Chukwu and was subjected to three pregnancy tests, which were negative. While working to raise the 500 dinars, she said she met a Nigerian named Soni (Sunday). The two were said to have become friends.

PUNCH Metro was told that policemen at the SCID and SARS, in the course of investigations, arrested John and Okito in Lagos.

John’s brother, Chukwu, was said to have threatened Precious that she would not be allowed to return to Nigeria until the police in Nigeria released John. However, Soni helped the victim to pay the money and insisted that the victim was no longer in captivity and Chukwu could not decide her fate.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Soni, who worked as a tiles contractor in Libya, arranged Precious’ transport to Lagos.

She told our correspondent that while preparing to return home, the pimp in Libya urged her to recruit girls from Lagos.

She said:
“She told me that now that I have seen how she worked and made her money, she would want me to join the business. There were more than 1,000 Nigerian girls who had been recruited to work in Libya. I was lucky to have survived and returned home safely.”
She said when she arrived in Lagos, she contacted a relative in the Okota area of the state, who took her to her parents.
“I can never forgive my cousin who did this to me. I trusted him and he decided to sell me for money,” she said.
Punch learnt that the victim would not return to her school in Ikenne. Her father, Okoro, said he was happy that his daughter returned home alive.

He said:
“There were four people involved in this sad tale and they were my town’s people. I spent more than N3m to get my daughter back. I was close to selling my house.”

Her mother, Blessing, commended police, The PUNCH and other Nigerians for their support. The Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, said the suspects would soon be taken to court.
