American tennis fans watching the medal ceremony for women's singles tennis gasped when the American flag being hoisted above the stadium fell from its crossbar and fluttered to the ground.
But only the Americans who happened to be in the stadium at on Saturday saw the mishap -- NBC did not broadcast the embarrassing accident until it showed up in a highlight reel.
Serena Williams was standing on the podium to accept her gold medal after beating Russian Maria Sharapova in straight sets (6-0, 6-1), when the flag suddenly came free of its mount, leaving only the Russian and Belarusian flags flying at All England Lawn Tennis Club.
